Wynn Resorts announces hiring for approx. 5,300 jobs at Encore.

If you read the internet, watch the news, or have a heartbeat; you probably realize that Las Vegas has become ground zero for negativity. When a professional athlete gets beaten and mugged off of the Las Vegas Strip, it makes national headlines. When a new lawsuit is filed, it’s all over the place. When thousands of new jobs are created, it gets little play.
Case and point? According to several reports, Wynn Resorts recently filed a couple of different lawsuits for moneys owed. How do I know? Because over the past several days, I read it about them on the internet about…well…a bazillion times.
Thankfully, I did the digging and also recovered a positive article! In Business Las Vegas recently wrote an article about how Wynn Resorts is going to begin hiring for approx. 5,300 new jobs in July 2008. The new jobs are being created to fill positions at Encore, which is expected to open in December 2008. We all knew these jobs were coming – it’s nice to see them arrive.
According to the article, approx. 1,700 of the approx. 5,300 jobs will be filled by current employees of Wynn Las Vegas. Wynn Resorts then intends on re-filling those approx. 1,700 positions. Still an approx. 5,300 new jobs. Glad we got that straight.
Think to yourself…
Did you hear about the over-5,000 new jobs at Encore on the news? Err, not really. Ok, did you hear how MGM MIRAGE laid off approx. 400 managers in April 2008? Of course you did. So how come 400 layoffs were so much more relevant than approx 5,300 new jobs?
The new jobs are what many would call the second phase to major hiring which started in 2007. Because of the billions worth of new mega-resorts and/or casino-hotel expansions currently under way, tens of thousands of jobs are expected to be created in Las Vegas by 2012.
Other New Jobs
While the Las Vegas real estate market has been pounded deep into the desert sand, at least some tangible good news is happening for Las Vegas.
- In 2007, Sands Corp. created approx. 4,000 new jobs at the Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino.
- MGM MIRAGE has announced that hiring for approx. 12,000 jobs at CityCenter will begin sometime in the near future (probably after Encore’s jobs are filled).
- M Resort, Cosmopolitan Resort Casino, Hard Rock expansion, Fontainebleau Resort, Echelon, Aliante Station, Planet Hollywood Towers, and the Caesars Palace expansion are all expected to contribute to the job creation.
Mega-resorts to the rescue?
What will the effect of tens of thousands of new jobs feel like for our local economy and/or real estate market?
Only time will tell.
